Rating: 3/5Good - But Not Perfect.

This review is from: NETGEAR EVA9150-100NAS Digital Entertainer Elite

Pros: Will play just about anything thrown at it. Blends with other equipment, Polished GUI Not perfect, but aesthetically pleasing

Cons: Headache with Windows 7. Internet Apps Lacking - No YouTube, NetFlix Support and will never get due to no more updates. PS3 does everything this does except ISOs and mkv s But I just convert mkv s into a compatible format.

Other Thoughts: I have had no problems with anything I have tried to play media wise, iso s, mkv s, avi s all without a hiccup. Was a bit annoying to get photo s to slideshow when played from a digital camera plugged directly into the USB port but I don t think this was an intended feature. As for Networking I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit and to put it bluntly Windows 7 is finicky about simply sharing a folder. After firmware updates, forum searches and the like, the solution I found was simple but far from perfect. When you enable Media Sharing through Windows Media Player, the Digital Elite recognizes it without a hitch. Just add your existing media folders to your WMP library and everything shares fine. Had to do the same thing for my PS3. Just use WMP to share and you are g2g. Since no new updates meaning we ll never get YouTube, Netflix support this is basically an ISO and mkv player as I use PS3 for everything else. Looking back would have just built HTPC.

Rating: 2/5Worthless

Pros: Wireless N, Built-In Hard Drive, Nice Remote.

Cons: It does play most videos, however, it doesn t fully support most compression formats. Video/Audio sync issues especially common when using FF/RW. Picture quality is grainy. Filesharing with Windows 7 requires a firmware update to a beta unsupported firmware. What s more, Netgear seems to have stopped development on this unit meaning the bugs will never be fixed.

Other Thoughts: This platform had a lot of potential. Decent CPU, onboard SATA, upgradable firmware and 802.11n. If someone were to ever develop a replacement firmware, it would be a great unit to own. As it stands, I ve switched back to my old WDTV and have been much happier - even though I have to manually copy everything to an external hard drive.

Rating: 2/5Yep

Pros: Does most of what it is supposed to do.

Cons: Don t expect internet features that are stellar. Lots of reboots. GUI is poor.

Other Thoughts: Netgear is no longer releasing firmware updates so product is essentially dead from that aspect. Features that are supposed to work, do not. No future releases have been mentioned. Last FW update was last year.

Rating: 2/5Not what I Needed

Pros: Not sure, did not do what I needed so I did not spend time learning more about it.

Cons: I bought this product hoping it would have internet connectivity and work well as an internet and media server. It may work well as a media server but as an internet device it is pretty useless.

Other Thoughts: A Cheap PC with a TV tuner and hard disc would work better for what I need.

Rating: 5/5Media Player of the Year

Pros: Excellent Product and Contrary to the other owner it does do ISO images as well as Blu Ray images and all other formats basically thrown at it. Also has a removable 3.5 hard drive installed as well.

Cons: Interface needs work.

Other Thoughts: Good product I have recommended it to several people who went out and purchased. Have it paired up with ReadyNas Pro as well and enjoy being able to watch movies, listen to music and yes it even does Youtube and a few others directly from the internet.

Rating: 4/5Best Media Player I have owned

Pros: Plays an amazing number of file types. Image quality is excellent. Easy to set up if you take the time to read the manual and forums. Will play standard DVD s including menus and special features.

Cons: Interface is OK but not great. It never ceases to amaze me how many companies make these media players and the interface seems to be an afterthought. Won t play Blu-Ray or HD-DVD file structures or iso images.

Other Thoughts: This is easily the best media player I have owned. I have owned several including a Dlink DSM-520 and a Linkys DMA2100 media extender. If you could take the interface from My Movies and put it on this box it would be 5 stars My Movies will create tag files for the EVA9150.

Rating: 4/5Solid All-Around

Pros: Will play basically anything. Sometimes it gives a warning Unsupported format - may not play correctly but it always does anyway. I wirelessly streamed Blu-Ray. mkv files in 1080p several times with no hesitation or choppiness. The more sophisticated files look gorgeous on a HDTV, as they should.

Cons: Firmware it ships with is garbage, upgrading firmware should be one of the first things you do. Interface is not very user-friendly and the remote is kind of messy. General usage has a learning curve, and requires patience to finally figure it out. Renaming files at the source is a pain, because the device has to scan the whole network from scratch to remove the old filename that it thinks is still there and add the new filename.

Other Thoughts: The included 500 GB hard drive helps with buffering but I didn t really need it because I don t store anything on it. Eh, since it s there, I might as well use it for something.

Also, if you are not using a stereo receiver, more advanced audio formats may not play because they HDMI input on the TV may be unable to support them. However, if someone does not already have that kind of home audio hardware, I would question why they would want or need media streamers in this class, so it s really a moot point.

Rating: 5/5Great Home Addition To Your Home Theater

Pros: Supports an incredible number of audio and video formats, built-in Wireless N, solid upconversion.

Cons: So-so Blu-ray support; Netflix, Hulu supported via 3rd party plug-in.

Other Thoughts: I ve been using this unit for over six months now and consider it one of the best pieces of home theater equipment I ve ever owned. It provides a seamless interface between the media collection of I have stored on my server, with an easy to navigate user interface and snazzy looks. The ability to play back DVD images ISO is especially useful, as ths basically turns your media server into a DVD/MP3 jukebox. Upconversion from DVD to 1080p is dynamite; I almost never turn on my Blu-Ray player.

While you can browse internet radio stations, YouTube, Podcasts, and RSS feeds with the EVA-9150, Hulu and Netflix are supported via PlayOn, which is a 3rd party plug in. This causes some hiccups e.g., your PC acts as a server for PlayOn, and if it is rebooted, you need to restart the EVA-9150, but otherwise works well.

Overall, the 9150 is a great media playback device, and at 1/3 the price of a media PC, a great value.

Rating: 5/5All Around Media Box

Pros: Plays nearly anything you can throw at it. Good community support ex. Vid2Eva Transcoding Tool easy to integrate into home network. Native YouTube support is cool, too. Hard drive upgradability is outstanding. Wireless N support is sufficient for most streaming applications, unlike wireless G.

Cons: Interface doesn t stand up to the flash and smoothness of the XBox 360 or PS3 s. Music support is good, but not great.

Other Thoughts: The best on the market right now, bar none.

Rating: 4/5Most feature rich media player

Pros: This box supports the most formats of any other player, by far, including full-bandwidth 40Mbps blu ray backups. It also plays streaming video from youtube and other sites including HD videos without relying on any computer. 802.11n is included with flat internal antennas. You can add an internal hard drive via a front panel door and a well implemented cage. Nice remote.

Cons: The list of supported hard drives is small - be sure to check before upgrading. A bit expensive but IMHO well worth the money

Other Thoughts: This is a big step forward from EVA8000.
